With only 427 square miles to its name, Marshall County is the smallest county in Oklahoma.
The county was created when Oklahoma achieved statehood in 1907. It was formerly Pickens County of the Chickasaw Nation.
The building of the Denison Dam, in 1942, led to the creation of Lake Texoma, and the region has benefited from tourism ever since, thanks to the miles of shoreline and the large lake, ideal for fishing and boating. Madill hosts the National Sand Bass Festival every year.
Agriculture has long been a part of life in Marshall County, with crops including corn, oats, cotton, rye and peanuts. Much of the cotton-growing area was lost when Lake Texoma was created. Marshall County is also a big area for ranching.
