Where Does Propane Come From?

Pitmon Helps You Make the Most of Propane in Your Home

If you’re like most homeowners in Oklahoma, you probably don’t spend much time thinking about where your propane comes from. You just know that when you turn on your stove or fire up your water heater, it’s there to provide reliable, efficient energy.

But have you ever wondered about its journey to your home? The story of propane is fascinating, starting deep within the earth and ending with dependable service from providers like us at Pitmon Oil & Gas.

Understanding propane’s origins can help you appreciate why it’s such a smart and sustainable choice for your home. This post will walk you through what propane is made of, how it’s produced, and why it’s a superior option compared to other energy sources.

What is Propane Made Of?

Propane is a simple hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C₃H₈. This means each molecule of propane consists of three carbon atoms and eight hydrogen atoms. It’s a by-product of two other major energy processes: natural gas processing and crude oil refining.

Because it’s sourced this way, propane is considered a cleaner-burning, alternative fuel. It’s non-toxic and won’t contaminate soil or groundwater, making it an environmentally friendly choice for homeowners. When you use propane, you’re using a fuel that’s created from existing energy production, which reduces waste and makes the most of our natural resources.

How is Propane Different from Natural Gas?

While both propane and natural gas are hydrocarbon fuels, they have some key differences that matter for homeowners.

• Energy content: Propane packs a more powerful punch. One cubic foot of propane contains about 2,516 BTUs (British Thermal Units) of energy, while the same amount of natural gas only contains about 1,030 BTUs. This means you need less propane to produce the same amount of heat, making it more efficient for appliances like water heaters and furnaces.
• Storage and portability: Natural gas is delivered to homes through a complex network of underground pipelines. This infrastructure isn’t available everywhere, especially in rural parts of Central and South Oklahoma. Propane, on the other hand, is compressed into a liquid and stored in tanks right on your property. This makes it a highly portable and accessible energy source, no matter where you live.
• Safety: Both fuels are safe when handled correctly, but propane has a distinct safety advantage. Since it’s stored on-site in a closed tank, the risk of a widespread service outage is eliminated. If there’s a problem, it’s localized to your system and can be addressed without affecting your neighbors.
