Kingston has a lot to offer!

Kingston was incorporated in 1906, after the town post office and businesses were moved to be next to the new railroad being built through what was then Indian Territory. In the next decade, the town prospered, with banks, cotton gins and an ice factory among the businesses.

Sadly, Kingston’s fortunes changed after the end of World War I. A drought, followed by a boll weevil infestation that damaged the area’s cotton farms, and soil depletion, bringing about the Dust Bowl, sent many residents away from Kingston to find work. Its population fell below 500.

Things began turning around for the town following the completion of the Denison Dam on the Red River, which resulted in the creation of Lake Texoma. The lake became a popular tourist destination for swimming, boating, fishing, camping and other outdoor recreation. The annual Striper Festival is a popular event and brings lots of people to Kingston and Lake Texoma. One of the most popular places to stay is Lake Texoma Lodge in Kingston.

Notable Kingston natives and residents include Dale Lay, a country music singer who performed with legends including Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Ernest Tubb and Little Jimmy Dickens. Lay never forgot where he came from and helped develop and support the Kingston High School band for years, hosting annual benefit concerts to help buy instruments, uniforms and other supplies. His son, Anthony Lay, hosts a radio show, “Country House Party,” broadcast on more than 80 iHeartCountry stations around the United States.

Another Kingston High School band alumnus, Greg Upchurch, is a rock drummer who got his start with Puddle of Mudd and has been the drummer for 3 Doors Down since 2005.
