Founded in 1887 and incorporated in 1898, Purcell was the only town located on the border of Oklahoma’s “Unassigned Lands.” For years, this region was a haven for ranchers, including Chickasaw, who raised 1,500 to 2,000 head of longhorn cattle. The railroads recognized that the site would be advantageous for cattle shipments once lands were opened up. Indeed, the city’s name comes from E.B. Purcell, an executive of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad.
Some of Purcell’s most famous residents include Tom Lester of Green Acres and Olympic gold-medalist basketball player Lester Lane.
